[5]: The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims the work of his hands. Day to day utters speech, and night to night proclaims knowledge. ... In the sun he has set his tabernacle; and he comes forth as a bridegroom out of his chamber: he will exult as a giant to run his course.

Thou has made the moon to mark the seasons, the sun knows its time for setting. Thou makest darkness and it is night, when all the beasts of the forest creep forth ยท 2 years ago

[5]. Our knowledge is infinitesimal compared to what we don't know. So how can we claim to have any knowledge whatsoever about the existence or non-existence of a universal purpose? ยท 2 years ago

Okay, I'll bite this one. But first I must say that for a String theorist the universe is actually a multiverse. Now your question. The universe is here for the same reason a painting is on the painter's easel ot the book on the writer's desk, to fulfil the creator's desire to create. I suppose my answer to the poll has to be [5] ยท 2 years ago

[1]. There is no reason to believe anything exists beyond the universe. That which may be perceived within and affect the universe may be considered a part of it, at the very least, and beyond this there does not seem to be any reason to believe in dualism or deities. Dualism in particular, of there being a spirit realm and a physical realm which are somehow separate but also able to interact... somehow... is a self-contradictory idea. The notion of the universe having a purpose requires evidence of consciousness outside of the universe, consciousness capable of *creating* the universe as a means to some end. ยท 2 years ago
