Advice for modest gaming PC?... Hi there! I'd like to buy/build a PC, but I know nothing about hardware stuff... I have around 700 euros to spend on a Central Unit, with the main constraint being that I should be able to play Minetest at 60 fps, while recording a video of the game... Is this a reasonable objective? Can I get such a PC for 700e?... If so, what would you guys recommend as a list of components?... Thanks in advance... Sorry if this isn't a very poetic first ever post on Station, he he heee! :)

@bavarianbarbarian: No waaay! ^^ Never would have thought you were talking about Ulysse 31 with that title! Very elaborate show indeed! · 2 years ago

haha, 宇宙伝説ユリシーズ31 aka Ulysse 31 is exactly what i mean xD loved that show as a child... and it scared the shit out of me sometimes... the shark people.. the blind people walking backwards to you... brrr · 2 years ago

@bavarianbarbarian: I just might assemble it myself, if I'm feeling bold! But I honestly think that this time around, I'll just ask the shop to build it... And for my next PC, after I cath up with hardware stuff, then I'll make my first build... Thak you again for the recommendations! (Not sure, but I guess the Nono nickname comes from "Ulysse 31", an 80' show, rather than the more modern one you'r talking about!) · 2 years ago

@bavarianbarbarian the screen is much bigger than a gameboy xD and yeah i even play games like wasteland 3 besides fallout 4, witcher 3, psp games and more on it. But i also started to play with gamepads on xbox 360 back in 2011 (skyrim) because i couldnt affort a gaming pc :) like i said; my take is to use the deck with the dock for gaming on a bigger screen. · 2 years ago

@nono just why i'm curious, is your nick from uchū densetsu Yurishīzu sātī wan? · 2 years ago

@nono, build it for yourself, you safe a lot of money, that's no rocket science if you can read a manual, just a few nuts and bolts ;) @devyl you really like gaming on a gameboylike screen on your couch? without a full blown gaming pc? i tried, was terrible compared to a 4k PC display... no keyboard, no mouse, tiny display... no way... · 2 years ago

Yeah, i just think on the price/value side if you dont want to spend 1000+ the deck is a better choice than building a classical pc. I have both for gaming, first brought the pc later the deck. the pc is now only used for the ray tracing stuff b/c all other works just perfect on this little deck which consumes much less power and i can play on the couch :) but yeah, for minetest-likes a cheap less powerful tower will do it without problems ;) · 2 years ago

Thanks @bavarianbarbarian! I think I will order a complete system at my local PC builder's shop, but your list will help me tell him what to put in the box! :) · 2 years ago

@nono a 650W be quiet! System Power 10 should do the job, if you do not want to build it for yourself, order just a complete system like this https://www.dubaro.de/GAMING-PC/HardwareDealz-Editionen/HardwareDealz-700-Edition::3689.html don't hesitate to ask if you can't read german ;) · 2 years ago

@bavarianbarbarian: Wow, thanks man! This is really helpful! I used to be a Macintosh fan boy, and I did my first Linux install on an iMac almost ten years ago,... Since then I've been buying second hand PC laptops... Never had to make actual component choices... So that's why I'm into "alternative computing stuff" while still totally ignorant about the hardware... If you don't mind though, what type of power supply would work with these? If you don't have anything special in mind, then what criteria I sould be looking for, given your list? Thanks again! (PS: As for the Steam Deck, I prefer more classical PC) · 2 years ago

ahh my fingers are to fast for my brain, you can get this for about 700-800e. This components will be fine for you i think · 2 years ago

@nono see it as a compliment, i wonder how you managed it to join geminispace with that lack of knowledge of hardware ;) let's see what we can do.. you playing Minetest without addons etc...? Intel i3-12100F

What about a Steam Deck with Docking Station? :) · 2 years ago

@bavarianbarbarian: Yeah I know... But the one I'm using now is sooo old and slow, I barely get 35 fps... Again, I'm aiming at a "modest" machine, but i have no idea what I should get as a CPU, graphics card, or motherboard... Plus I hear some types of RAM don't work with certain CPU platforms... So I'm a bit lost, to say the thuth! :/ · 2 years ago

👽 bavarianbarbarian

That's not a gaming PC, that's an office PC, to be honest ;) Minetest says you need a 2GHz CPU, 512MiB RAM and 64MiB VRAM.. you can play this on your cellphone.. or a 50e laptop.. · 2 years ago
