Been trying out some of the alternative smolweb places. Most recently I've been on Mastodon and it's been really just a wasteful distraction by comparason to the building and learning my BBS and the Gemini space has encouraged. It's got it's place I suppose but iI think my presence there might take a rapid back seat.

@o9e I agree, this feels better. I think Station represents the idea that grew into what we call social media. This is much more like the BBS. As some of my associated from that world say: "more social, less media" 路 6 months ago

Mastodon is a great concept, in principle. My problem is I have no interest in social media as a concept.

Is Station social media, per se? Dunno. If so, then I'm contradicting myself as I quite like it here! 路 6 months ago

Well to be fair I only ended up at Mastodon because I needed to contact a Gemini. I had an account there some 10 years ago but left for the same reasons. I spent a lot of time in packet radio. I didn't need parallels to YouTube or FB. I've been trying out this internet since it was born. Though I was more an Angelfire webpage guy than myspace. We have a ham equivalent called Seven3.net that's quite good. I played with some mesh net platforms ZombieChat and FireChat. Via the Telnet BBS scene we have Gopher. I still sit every Sunday and do corespondance by email with my friends and family. I can spend 2-3 hours writing emails. 路 6 months ago

what're some of the other smolweb places, aside from mastodon and Gemini and your bbs, have you tried? 路 6 months ago

yeah I got on mastodon for a while, but found out it was geared too much like other social platforms... and became a timesink. Also, i personally didn't find much by way of interesting conversations. Kinda hard when you're looking for really niche topics, but c'est la vie. 路 6 months ago
