Looking for an idea: we have several public forest areas with beautiful paths not far away, on the outskirts of Berlin. Does anyone know of small monitoring or mapping projects that would be suitable for occasional walks? It could also be something that I set up on my own for now. And is manageable. Inspiration?

definitely interesting ideas!! about Berlin: with a bit of luck you can find a niche here where you can live well. As a non-native Berliner, the Alps are mostly missed.... 路 3 weeks ago
@danrl i enjoyed undergroud goa parties in the middle of the forest when i was young. not my music anymore, i am an old man now xD i need metal and magical potions from the druids &) 路 4 weeks ago
precise mapping could be done with gnss stuff. For example gnss rtk systems as seen on gnss.store or sparkfun.com.
if a phone gps is just barely ok, you can use swmaps app and find a local ntrip source for correction data to vastly improve precision. maybe open casters lile rtk2go.com will know a ntrip source within 10km. berlin must have a few i guess.
other than that, kinda agree with @bavarianbarbarian on staying as far away from berlin as possible except for an occasional techno party night. i lived there and still think it鈥檚 a garbage city at best.
long live the forests 馃尦 路 4 weeks ago
As a half_elf, walks through the forest are my JAM 路 1 month ago
You can buy some very cheap microcontroller kits, with all sorts of sensors, that you could then teach the kids how to read/use and come up with things to measure. There was a computer program as well, called sketch something, intended to visually program.
As for tracking, you can use most phones that is capable of making GPX paths, they can be uploaded/shared to sites and with others. Osmand and Trailsense are two good android apps.
Potsdam is indeed very beautiful, even this time of year! 馃榿 路 1 month ago
A walk in the forest sounds lovely! Forgive my ignorance though...what do you mean by a monitoring/mapping project? Depending on the age of the child... have them make a map, on paper, of the route. Count the number of fir/birch/oak trees, or squirrels-per-hour, or (in the springtime) the names and quantities of flowers that bloom within sight of the path measured over time. Or if the kids are younger, pretend that pixie pirates have stolen the queen's enchanted hair-clip, and that they're on a quest to find+return it (when you surreptitiously drop it at the end of the walk) by answering the pixie pirate king's many riddles which you relate along the walk. 路 1 month ago
don't be offended, but i would teach my children to move away from berlin as far as they could ;) never seen such a shithole in germany except Frankfurt central station maybe... 路 1 month ago
And ideally something that you can teach children something about. 路 1 month ago
