@martin you'll like this too then. We created a shorthand in code as it takes so long to spell out everything. That in turn bled into voice communications. When parting hams would send the numerical 73 which was to be "good bye and best wishes.' And upon parting on the radio in voice we say this to each other too. Sometimes even on the highway you'll have one radio operator recognize another (license plate call sign) and send 73 via code still with the horn. You see 88 less often as that's hugs and kisses... When one of us dies we say they are a silent key. From ending a transmission you send SK. · 5 months ago

Reminds me as a CW operator (Morse Code) we converse hand to ear. They say a good telegraph operator has "a good fist," and that a poor one is a Lid, (allegedly from sleepy operators sticking a can lid in the closed sounder so it would drop and wake them when a message came in.) · 5 months ago
