What would the world be like if animals could speak and communicate with each other, forming cross-species civilizations (assuming there were no humans)? I don't think it would be much different than it is now in nature. We humans can't even begin to imagine what kind of languages the animals have, which might be very similar to ours...

@zeerooth I think gorillas, for example, also have such a language, or would be able to develop one (I think this applies to many great apes). A prime example of this is the female gorilla Koko, who used American Sign Language.
But I can also imagine such a language very well with elephants and dolphins, as well as with wolves/dogs, just to name a few...

It seems like it'd give some sort of advantage to predated creatures, in that they could communicate and collaborate to avoid predators. But whether they'd want to form societies beyond mutual interest? I don't know. Most of the imaginations of this are simply anthropomorphizations. 路 2 months ago
Well I'm pretty sure that from a scientific point of view all animals on Earth, with the exception of humans of course, lack the ability to create complex languages needed to communicate effectively and express complex ideas (I think only whales are relatively advanced in that regard).
Still, I also find the idea fascinating. I always wondered and tried to imagine what a bird language (real language, not just simple calls) formulated by some bird civilization would sound like. And how would they write it down? There is a lot to consider. 路 2 months ago
