@marginalia, great article on IPCC report. While I agree, realistically I foresee a world of slightly less conspicuous consumption at best.

it's complicated. that's the problem. especially everything about climate and economy. is it better to be vegan or to stop traveling to the ocean in summer? you can't change everything at once but since neither seems to have an impact and different groups are not consistent in what's more effective, people just wait for someone else to decide. that's how I see it. but I became 95% vegan and rest vegetarian to start somewhere ยท 3 years ago

There are those who say 'lets go back to the old ways' and there are those who go 'lets solve this problem with something new'. Thus there seem to be two ways to tackle climate change:

1) revert to hunter-gatherers

2) find another way

Unfortunately as far as we can tell #1 has never worked in the past and #2 only happens with extreme incentive - when crops start failing and people people start dying.

What will cause people to live less luxuriously? Nothing.

But humans have survived ecological disasters before - with technologic solutions: Sewerage in rivers causing disease, acid rain killing crops, the ozone hole, etc. etc. ยท 3 years ago

It may well be a doomed cause, I don't know. I do know I can change how I act, though. I for one would rather go down swinging than to resign without even trying, which is what most people seem to be doing. They feel other people aren't doing enough, so they aren't doing anything either. ยท 3 years ago
