It is unfortunate that some fool has decided to peddle his "completed product" (a sketchy cryptocurrency which in no way meets my own definition of a working currency) on Geddit repeatedly. Also apparently conflating Gemini (protocol) with other projects named the same, though interestingly not the cryptocurrency exchange.

@marginalia Yes, agreed. Pull is better than push here. 路 3 years ago
@lykso I think it's something that can be applied recursively. The same way you can curate a list-of-bookmarks, you can also curate a list of lists-of-bookmarks you've found interesting. Curated bookmark directories were pretty big in the early days of the internet. When you going from manual curation to automation, and start being able to push either links or feeds onto other peoples' feeds, you're inviting spam and astroturfing. 路 3 years ago
@marginalia Yes, I like this idea. Very much like "tinylogs." But I also think there's a space to be filled by big/medium aggregate feeds. It could help discovery if there were a way to, e.g., publish the stream of tinylogs I am personally subscribed to, or curate "bookmark.gmi"s relevant to a particular category. I'm also wondering how much popularity it would take for someone's self-hosted Raspberry Pi to experience a "hug of death." I like the idea of there being some sort of federation/p2p scheme such that copies of popular feeds can be served up from other self-hosters that have already downloaded the feed. 路 3 years ago
I think a better model for public bookmarks is just for people to self-host their own, curated bookmark lists, rather than have an automated public system of the reddit/HN model where everything goes into one big feed. 路 3 years ago
@lykso Geddit definitely could, Lobste.rs already do that 路 3 years ago
I wonder if we could fashion some sort of "web of trust" type thing using client certificates to help with the spam problem. 路 3 years ago
Unfortunate indeed. Whenever there's an open-access input field on the internet, spammers will gladly fill it with their profit-seeking nonsense.
Geddit could use some moderation and/or voting features to weed these out. 路 3 years ago
