I am working with the idea of "opening hours" for my server.
I've been thinking of what to do with a server, I don't want to get a VPS or build one. I don't want a device on my network that is exposed to the internet.
It occurred to me, that I could run a device for a limited daily time, while monitoring it. To have opening hours for say the evening of GMT.

@darkghost Well governments always have crazy opening hours, I just didn't assume that would extend to online self service. 馃槀 路 1 week ago
@hanzbrix Oh wow. That's when I do my taxes! I guess I could still do then and file on a weekday but man what a pain *cries in American* 路 1 week ago
@darkghost I've heard of similar stuff yes. One of the things that made me think in these lanes, was actually that our local government turns off features during the weekend, so you for example can't do taxes on the weekend. 馃槀 路 1 week ago
@hanzbrix I think it's a thing on some game servers to have limited hours. I've also heard of people powering off media servers/NAS during their sleeping hours. I do the same with the cable modem. But I'm only aware of low tech magazine actually advertising that they operate when the sun shines well. They do have a battery for overnight, but a stretch of bad weather will bring it down. 路 1 week ago
@darkghost That is an interesting idea as well, do you know of any other time limited services? 路 1 week ago
One thing that low tech magazine does is have a solar powered server. It's available when it's available and if the sun doesn't shine the server isn't available. Maybe it could be solar powered to enforce daylight hours. 路 1 week ago
