I'm interested in a wearable step-counter that doesn't come with privacy issues. Step-counting could be done entirely locally, without even needing a smartphone. Do any of you know of one that works? What's your experience been?

The PineTime (as well as a number of non-smart digital watches) has a built-in pedometer. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it does the trick if you just want an idea of how many steps you've done. 路 1 month ago

You want GadgetBridge and one of the many many compatible devices. Sync to your phone every few hours and you can even set up automatic export.

It's all over BT, no WiFi, no cloud. A few devices you have to register once, first, via the internet. 路 1 month ago

hackish projects like this sound fun, but I don't have the time :( 路 1 month ago

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I don't mind transcribing a number of steps manually, or simply glancing at the number at mealtimes to see if I'm hitting a self-imposed metric. Uploading all that to the cloud seems like overengineering. 路 1 month ago

No, but reporting is the key. You want to keep track of your records automatically? Sadly proprietary devices coupled with "cloud" bs are far ahead and keeping a server for that is a maintenance pain. But it can be a nice hackish project. 路 1 month ago
