I have just realized that a lot of people who partecipate on the gemini space don't necessarily have a capsule, or aren't implementers, and this is very cool indeed! 😊

Hosting your capsule can cost you no more than $3.50 monthly on a VPS.
This is my solution to avoid a device on my home exposed to the internet.
I wrote an easy guide to achieve it, you don't even need to create a JAIL (FreeBSD container) to have GMID up and running it is pretty straight forward.
Now that I am thinking about I have to update the my guide... 🤔 · 5 months ago
That's me! I don't have a capsule yet b/c I haven't decided on a host. Self-hosting sounds intimidating cos I don't want that kind of attack surface on my home router. I'm sure I'd say something that would enrage someone else and then ugh. But I like the space for a variety of reasons, and someday I'll launch a capsule · 5 months ago
i think most people don't host their own stuff because of the barrier of computer knowledge needed to self-host something. good thing there are chill admins willing to give a space to those that don't know how to self-host stuff · 5 months ago
I still have my Gopher server up and I'm too lazy to move to Gemini... something I probably should do · 6 months ago
@m0xee nice story! · 6 months ago
I've been eyeing Gemini and lurking for years, before I decided to take the plunge and self-host my capsule, and for some reason I did that before making an account here, which I did not that long ago — for some reason I still feel uncomfortable making accounts for online services that I don't host myself, even when it comes to relatively safe spaces, such as Gemini or Fedi 😅 · 6 months ago
