I successfully flashed Sailfish OS to a Sony Xperia 10iii today, which means I am now officially free of Oligarch Tech for all my personal computing. Feels fantastic.

Sailfish is nice — there is good Fediverse client and an application that can handle encrypted Matrix chats. Then there is Waydroid for the missing pieces. I think I could even switch to it, but there is only a community port for my phone, so battery life is incomparable: with Android I can easily get 5-7 days of battery life out of my phone and with Sailfish it only lasts a day, maybe two…

I wonder if there is a good Gemini browser for Sailfish? 🤔 · 2 months ago

@half_elf_monk Honestly, use cases are probably limited. Sailfish even warns users to think of it as a lightweight.

I almost exclusively use it so I can do research and reading via Lynx. I'm not even allowed to install browser adblockers at work, much less have access to a command line, and my patience cannot handle most of the Web these days. · 2 months ago

@drmollytov - legitimate question, what's the usecases for a terminal on a phone? I'm not opposed, simply curious. For attention/habit reasons I try to limit mobile use as much as possible, and I have a job that lets me use full FlOSS linux as a daily driver so I can use the terminal wherever. What do you need the terminal for on the go? · 2 months ago

Thank you @remy for making me aware of Planet Computer hardware - I had no idea it existed. · 2 months ago

Best to go without a corporate phone OS. I just flashed GrapheneOS on a brand new Pixel 8a, because I broke my OnePlus Nord WiFi during flashing the community edition of /e/os. And a wifi hotspot is crucial to me. I thought I'd have some more years with my OnePlus, but no way. With Graphene on the Pixel 8a I have a little over 5 years of support left. I wish they would build longer lasting or supported devices :( · 2 months ago

@half_elf_monk I love it so far. It's easy, intuitive, and it'll let you turn on/off almost anything.

I chose it because a friend said four magic words to me: "terminal on your phone." LIFE. CHANGING. MAGIC. · 2 months ago

Congrats! I've not used SailfishOS at all... what's your experience been like so far? Why'd you choose that OS and not something else? · 2 months ago
