reading this book titled “the comfort crisis” and it speaks to me. a lot. great book so far (60% in). typing this while camping, fittingly.
what’s the most uncomfortable thing you have experienced recently?

@danrl It’s not that big, I consider it a discomfort most of the time. I don’t know. Still can make you stronger mentally. · 3 weeks ago
@deerbard that sounds like proper pain. i could have been clearer in my question i guess, the book made a distinction between discomfort and pain. not sure if one can really gain strength from pain. but the thesis is that one can gain strength and happiness from discomfort. · 3 weeks ago
A growing pain in my joints. Pain that lasts months already. Sometimes it makes me not want to get up in the morning. · 3 weeks ago
@dragfyre very interesting take. i like thinking about careful exposure to hardship as a growth opportunity, not only for kids. there is a huge spectrum between discomfort and hardship, and at a minimum we should all get accustomed to discomfort, but also consider hardship or taking on the occasional extra responsibility for something that is of great importance to us. thank you for sharing your thoughts on this! · 3 weeks ago
@danrl after 3 beers we barbarians start getting thirsty :P · 4 weeks ago
I left you a few thoughts about comfort and hardship as it relates to family and being present for others.

@whixr you are spot on as far as the book is concerned. don't know the author's work well, first time i read one of his writing, but he claims that what you are describing is exactly what makes one happier. too comfortable isn't good, neither for body nor mind. · 4 weeks ago
@bavarianbarbarian a few drinks in, no grammar rules apply. i don't drink anymore, but when i still was drinking there were no grammar rules after the third augustiner. damn good beer in my mind. · 4 weeks ago
@hway food poisoning isn't fun, indeed. it's a different type of discomfort, the book i read refers more to doing uncomfortable but healthy and natural things, like exposing oneself to weather, the seasons or doing manual labor · 4 weeks ago
done with the book. it was very good. inspired me to continue working manually after my excavator broke but the job wasn't finished. we are made to do hard things, and it is fun to do hard things. · 4 weeks ago
scuse my bad grammar, i had some drinks &) · 4 weeks ago
@hway yay food poisining is hell, i am still suffering from a very tasty sea urchin for years now ;) but the most 'uncofrontable' thing is that my best fried who i call my brother is getting married... so i have a woman and 2 kids to now when the shit hits the fan &) · 4 weeks ago
food poisoning... and philosophy wont help much, unfortunately · 4 weeks ago
The other day, I was having some work done on the air conditioner. The tech was talking about how helpless and pissy people get when their climate control system stops working. I spent last winter living in an uninsulated building with no central heating/cooling. We decided doing a bit of that is probably really healthy. Having all your needs met, all the time, probably comes with side effects. · 4 weeks ago
This log you just wrote made me realise I have been pretty damn comfortable most of the time for a long time.
I did only bring one pair of shoes to Poland that are very heavy and very hard at the front, which I have however been using to walk every day, pushing 25K steps. My toes are bruised (one was actually bleeding last night).
Had I known the weather here and overall conditions were so favourable for running, this would have not happened. But alas, I did have to pack a small bag for a 3 weeks stay. · 1 month ago
