recap: year one of building a debt-free, off-grid, zero energy home. if you are blessed with long enough attention span you can watch us struggle for two hours. did we bite of a project too big to chew?

@ditheez interesting that the goats have their preferences. so maybe not the universal solution i was hoping for.
the mountains are a cool place to be. nice veggie setup! looking forward to hearing how your tree growing went when the time comes.
we planted 15 additional redwood seedlings today on the balcony hoping they will grow quickly and that we can replant them in the fall to continue our reforestation project.
maybe we should do the same for fruit trees, since they take a while to grow. everything is so slow :) nature teaches patience. 路 7 months ago
@danrl We are in the Ozark mountains so the climate is pretty mild. This past winter got down to about 10 degrees F a couple of nights but compared with more northern states it doesn't last very long. We have some goats but they actually eat more grass than underbrush. We hoped they would help clear thorns and brambles. We are going to wait until fall to plant fruit trees. We want apples, pears, and cherries. So far we have planted onions, tomatoes, cabbage, lettuce, radishes and herbs. We are trying to not do too much early on so it is more manageable. 路 7 months ago
@ditheez your journey sounds amazing! we eat little meat or animal products, so we ate unsure what animals to get in the long term. we feel they are an important part of the ecosystem but are unsure which ones to introduce. goats would eat some of the invasive species we heard, but then they attract the nearby mountain lions. what animals do you have? whats your climate like? what kind of fruits and veggies do you grow?
thanks for the nice words! 路 7 months ago
I enjoyed your recap of your offgrid process. A year ago we sold our house and moved out of the city. We are starting a garden and raising animals for food. We hope to start building a house soon. I love hearing and watching other peoples progress. You have a great view by the way. 路 7 months ago
we are moving slow (not in a hurry), saving every penny by living below what we could afford, and putting everything we save into materials and necessary tools. then build everything ourselves. we do work a lot to make enough money for this adventure. it will probably take ten years until we finish the last bits and pieces, but we hope to get the wind and water tight shell of the building up within the next three years. 路 8 months ago
I'm not on youtube, but this sounds like a neat project. How can you manage to do all that debt-free? I'd love to do something like this too. 路 8 months ago
