It is clear to me that many people here in the west just have no conception of what religion actually is. They've been blinded by the monoculture of Christianity that they cannot see past religion as Christian dogma, doctrine, and structure. In fact, that's *not* what religion is, and being atheist doesn't make you irreligious - they are completely different things. Religion is not about the divine or about the supernatural, or about dogma. To have such a restricted definition of religion excludes the wide variety of religious expression and religious history.

yes omg i HATE when people assune atheist is the opposite of religious. the opposite of religious is non-religious and the opposite of atheist is theist. like, it's right there in the word, how is this so hard for people? · 8 months ago
