discovered a cool catagory of programs called "fantasy consoles": You program games on a theoretical retro console, and share them with everyone else! Most possible FOSS one is Tic80 https://tic80.com/

I've been learning more about them too. A friend recommended one after I mentioned liking uxn (https://100r.co/site/uxn.html) 路 3 years ago
@ailolai If you're into Amstrad CPC you should checkout fellow geminaut Juan Martinez's capsule. He makes homebrew games for old systems including a handful for CPC that are really good. gemini://capsule.usebox.net/games/ 路 3 years ago

TIC80 is a lot nicer for running on various devices since it is actually open source while Pico 8 is proprietary. For example TIC80 has a libretro core so you can play the carts in retroarch. There is a libretro core that tries reverse engineer Pico 8 but it doesn't work for most carts. Since there is no Pico 8 source available it makes things like that a lot harder to do. 路 3 years ago
@clair_de_soleil You're welcome! Yeah the Odroid Go Advance is pretty cool. I love the older one too. Just called Odroid Go and powered by an ESP32. 路 3 years ago
@cobradile94 Yes and yes, one example is the PICO-8 where people have been porting it to various handhelds for a while. 路 3 years ago
I鈥檓 still trying to wrap my head around the idea. Are these emulators for consoles that don鈥檛 physically exist? Can someone make a physical console out of them? 路 3 years ago
@kelbot also thx for mention on smolzine :] 路 3 years ago
@ailolai I've actually been thinking about getting something like this or a Commodore, but maybe a few days late for a shoping binge :( 路 3 years ago
I tried those, but I have a softer heart for "real" old hardware... the Amstrad CPC line, specially :) 路 3 years ago
@kelbot Odriod Go seems cool, surprised I never heard of these. Might actually pick one up on ebay 路 3 years ago
TIC80 is very cool. I like to play some of the carts on my Odroid Go Advance. Who was, someone on station made a game for a virtual console where each "cartridge" is printed on a single piece of paper in the form of QR codes. 路 3 years ago
I love these. I feel like the philosophy behind them isn't all that different from gemini. One cool piece of software that I think is worth a mention is picoCAD for the PICO-8. https://johanpeitz.itch.io/picocad 路 3 years ago
