Yesterday on a train I've seen more people on books. Less smartphone, more books. You can spot more smiles and a better atmosphere. "Always on" and mobility were traps and maybe something is starting to light again under the ashes.

This reminded me of how I used to read books while riding my bike to school. · 3 weeks ago

It was the first shine of light in months @m0xee. Today a certain type of device is required, even for essential services, and it shouldn't. No or few low-tech fallbacks are available. To keep low-tech alternatives we need a bunch of people like @whixr to resist. Using smartphone starts with a choice and ends as obligation. Schools here are experimenting total ban because in the classroom attention issues are unbearable. · 3 weeks ago

My last experience using the public transportation was the opposite of yours, not quite depressing… but rather alarming: smartphones are often associated with younger generation, but I'm not too young myself and now even people older than me seemingly got consumed by always staring into their phones — no one's even looking around anymore except for a couple of people. Just a few years ago — or so it seems, it wasn't the case. · 3 weeks ago

it is happening! but we are not many… smart phone sales are up and to the right.

still, this is amazing news! · 3 weeks ago

I never adopted any of that tech, so the last 15 years has been like being the last living human, wandering through a wasteland populated only by zombie junkies shuffling around in their lotus fueled daze.

If I did see someone reading a book in public (which I never do) ... at this point I would assume they were using it like methadone because their phone was low on battery :P · 3 weeks ago

@chirale I have really been looking into the MP02. I'm also looking into the light phone since that is built on android and I could sideload duo which is required for my school, and hopefully the light phone 2 goes down in price as the 3 comes out. My current one just runs straight android and I'd like something a bit different with a more interesting form factor. What I really want is an eink phone with a qwerty keyboard running a heavily skinned android with a terminal open to use. The closest thing I've seen is the minimal phone but that's absolutely vaporware. · 3 weeks ago

e-ink is a wonderful tech. About dumbphones I'm looking into Punkt MP02. · 3 weeks ago

That's the exact reason I have been moving more and more towards e-ink. I have an e ink phone and have been looking into the pinenote. The conveinence of modern technology is undeniable but the way it is now destroys our ability to be present.
