I just worked with Claude AI to write a screensaver for my Haiku box. I haven't written C++ in decades (and admittedly it did most of the work this time). The experience of working with it, and collaboratively probolem solving, was aking to working with a slightly amnesic expert coder. I achived the desired outcome ina timeframe much shorter than I could have with just Google alone. Quite mind-blowing how far this technology has come.

@darkghost - that is a delicious tale - thanks for sharing :) 路 2 weeks ago
@ruby & @m0xee - Haiku certainly has had quite a bit more visibility in the last 18 months. I agree that it sits naturally well with the Fediverse community, but it also seems to be getting quite a bit of love from the mainstram retro-tech community too, eg on YouTube... Maybe becuase Beta 5 is pretty rock solid - I daily drive it (in parallel with a MacBook) - it is my prefered platfrom for a number of things. 路 2 weeks ago
@ruby Haiku sure seems to get more attention in the recent years 鈥斅燾ould be a perception bias from hanging around Fediverse and Geminispace more, but its development also seems to be active, so maybe it's indeed so! 路 2 weeks ago
All glory to Haiku. I was a BeOS user with BeOS 5 PE. I ran it full time during my sophomore year of college and when the university IT dept required an antivirus on all computers, I brought mine down and gave them a head scratcher. They insisted on putting the CD in and failing to run the installer. It was amusing and kind of sad. 路 2 weeks ago
Glad that Claude was able to help you to figure it out! LLMs can be very helpful for coding as long as we understand its limitations, which it sounds like you do! :)
It's also neat making new stuff for Haiku, which seems to be gaining a bit in popularity recently! 路 2 weeks ago
@hanzbrix indeed - I've gotten pretty good with server admin stuff through years of casually grinding my way through related hobbies. Hoping some AI assistance might uplift my coding skills too :)
@bavarianbarbarian I have some vague memory of installing BeOS on my office mac in the late 90s. Either that or I just booted it from the CD... Either way it didn't stick although I remember being briefly enamoured with it. 路 2 weeks ago
@bronzie94 I sadly also don't think a library like that exists. 鈽癸笍
Doing the stuff on the daily definitely helps.
I am trying to actually learn Bash for the first time, having written hundreds of scripts, hacking my way through them. 馃槀
Bash is super weird btw. 路 2 weeks ago
@bronzie94 used haiku when it was called BeOS, great piece of software. 路 2 weeks ago
@bavarianbarbarian - thanx :)
@hanzbrix - maybe if you are a developer - I am not, and never was. Just studied computer science 10000 years ago >.< 路 2 weeks ago
for the sake of the gods, a haiku user! may crom be with you and your blade never dull! 路 2 weeks ago
I feel like snippet library with a search function could accomplish the same thing, with much fewer resources and errors? 馃槀 路 2 weeks ago
