folks, recently at a local discounter i bought a very strange longsleeve thermo shirt for a very low budged price. that thing is the sh*t, fits like a second skin and i can sit outside at 0C wirhout freezing. wtf is this? not even my merino wool stuff works like this.

@bavarianbarbarian just ek1. i think i would have liked a chance to do ek2 but not sure if i would have enjoyed it as much as ek1. what i heard about it sounded dreadful, but maybe that’s part of the selection process and usual bragging? the people who had it were usually very collected, calm, strong and mentally strong individuals. impressive soldiers for sure.
why did you leave? did you like it there? it’s a weird job, isn’t it? · 1 month ago
My vote is that at some point the stink just becomes too powerful and the olfactory senses get stunned into submission.
Homeless people just haven't leveled up enough. 😂 · 1 month ago
@danrl you know the rules of engagement, we are not allowed to talk about. · 1 month ago
@danrl thanks, you have done the EKL 1+2? *raiseshisironcross · 1 month ago
@bavarianbarbarian is there any literature on the soap theory of smell going away? when i walk by homeless people in the street i can smell it for sure. are they showering still according to your theory? probably there are a million factors contributing to smell
of a mammal, maybe nutrition and bathing in sand or rubbing against trees plays a role? at some point adult humans didn’t have much predators anymore i think, but also we didn’t have soap before we reached that evolutionary step and still survived. · 1 month ago
@bavarianbarbarian the smell theory is intriguing. since i strive to live more in line with nature, maybe i clean myself too often? i have a need to shower once a day (albeit quickly because i shower cold 🥶). this week my wife and i started making our own soap without all the things they tend to put into commercial care products which we are somewhat suspicious about after reading the ingredients lists. · 1 month ago
@bavarianbarbarian i shall salute you, comrade. dso is quite a place to be! i stayed for 12 years in various locations doing this and that, some mundane and other things more… special maybe 🤫 but since i always was an unruly fellow i never made it to captain. i had a great time at the einzelkaempfer, though, that may be my biggest accomplishment i can talk about. good, long gone, young and stupid times… · 1 month ago
@hanzbrix we tried it, after about 2 weeks you stop smelling. i am not a scientist, but without soap it seems that your body stops being smelly. just think about that we have survived millions years without soap and the predators have not smell us.. dunno... · 1 month ago
@bavarianbarbarian that does sound fun and fun to look at. 😁
Remember to make sure that the no stink part, isn't just you used to your own smell. 😂 · 1 month ago
@danrl i always hated mountains, but i i am not allowed to talk about the things i loved... *clickclacklongdistance · 1 month ago
@danrl DSO from Regensburg salutes you comrade! · 1 month ago
@bavarianbarbarian, did you (have to) serve? what do you like most about mountain life, i never asked. · 1 month ago
@bavarianbarbarian, almost! gebirgsfernmelder, so yeah we had the edelweiss and the more fancy uniform but we didn’t do the skiing and shooting thing that you see on tv. we put up antennas and stuff. coming from the great plains of northern germany, the army sparked my love for the mountains, my final home and resting place (even though on a different continent, but what gives?) · 1 month ago
@danrl you have been in the Gebirgsjägertruppe? · 1 month ago
@anzbrix I'm taking my outdoor gear to the max for testing, i am wearing this shirt for 3 weeks now. no bad smell, still warm AF, except that i look like a lycra fetish bunny that thing is great. xD · 1 month ago
I am tempted to get one, but my skin doesn't agree with synthetic materials. But then maybe the new ones aren't as bad and it is worth giving it a try. Italy has not had a really cold winter in a while, but I expect to spend some of the winter months in Poland and I am sure it's going to be colder than over here. · 1 month ago
@bavarianbarbarian Synthetic fibers can just do some crazy stuff. 😂
I think it is mostly about layers though, the more layers that can trap air efficiently, the less heat loss. With modern synthetic fibers, those layers can be made so that 3-4 layers are thinner than a woolen shirt. · 1 month ago
had one of those when i was in the army doing winter things in the alps. boy that thing was the bomb! best piece of equipment i had. · 1 month ago
