[Part I.] A couple of days before the new moon (06/27/2022), a short-necked dark gray bird with long saber-shaped wings and a forked tail somehow penetrated to our balcony of a high-rise building. The frame had dried up for a long time and did not open, but at the top between the concrete plates there was a small hole and apparently from there there was an illegal entry.

The bird dumbly darted about on the floor, took off, fell and darted again among all the rubbish on the balcony, and I did not know what to do. I called my parents who were at the dacha and described the situation.

@superfxchip @oofbar Thank you for your answers.

Oh, maybe not everyone understand the meaning of the word "dacha" - it's a small house outside the city with a plot of land for gardens. Words "hut" or "cabin" would be synonyms. 路 2 years ago

"It" is probably the word most native speakers would use. 路 2 years ago

@astroseneca I'm glad the bird made it alright!

As to your question, maybe they/them? I'd say that works for any being. Otherwise, I wouldn't say it's 'incorrect', i've heard ppl bring up animals using "it". 路 2 years ago

I used the pronoun 'it' to describe the bird. The question to English natives, was it correct? I was in a hurry to describe this event and forgot the English grammar.

@superfxchip This very active bird is definitely going to be fine. 路 2 years ago

[Part IV.] Then I went away for a while on my own business and suddenly heard this squeak, which seemed familiar to me. I went out into the hallway and saw how dad was carrying a swift to the kitchen window, and it was squeaking at the top of its throat and trying to hit dad with its beak. He safely pushed the swift out of the window and I hope that it flew as it should.

P.S. The squeak of the swift seemed familiar to me, because there are whole flocks of them cutting circles past my window. 路 2 years ago

[Part III.] Having sprinkled water on it and leaving the saucer, I went to look on the Internet what kind of bird it was. I thought it was a swallow, but the Internet convinced me that it was a swift!

In the evening, the parents arrived, but dad was in no hurry to run to save the swift: he took a shower, had dinner and sat down to watch TV. It was the eve of the new moon and, of course, I was furious with his attitude towards the poor bird. In the morning I woke up with gloomy thoughts and went to look at the balcony. There I heard a still vigorous fluttering. 路 2 years ago

[Part II.] Dad advised to pick up the bird and let it out through the window in the kitchen. I said that, unlike him, who was born in the countryside, I was afraid to mess with wild life.

Maybe the bird has rabies or something? In general, I said him to come and catch its himself. The train only arrives in the evening. I poured water into a saucer and went to try to water the bird. She sat motionless in the whitewash container, spreading her long wings, blinking her beady eyes. 路 2 years ago
