Thinking of starting a small home server for my family using OwnCloud and Raspberry Pi. Not really comfortable having my “main” backup be Google Drive anymore. I currently mirror it to Dropbox, but I’m looking to add a local backup to the mix which will become the new “main” backup.
Every month this year I’ve heard of someone’s entire Google account getting nuked because they get hit with copyright strikes on their YouTube accounts or copyrighted media shared from Google Drive. If my Google account goes down, I need it to be a mere inconvenience – not utterly catastrophic to my entire way of life.

That story with the Google account being nuked is the reason I try not to rely on a single corporation for everything, you’re creating a single point of failure that way. I guess my lifestyle of doing everything physically and the old fashioned way helps me there. · 3 years ago
Might look into pihole soon after. Don't need a ton of media features but gonna play around with that stuff first. :) · 3 years ago
the rpi that hosts the smb: share is also running pihole and a few other home network services and chugging along just fine. they're fantastic devices · 3 years ago
i moved everything off dropbox and google drive a few months ago. overall around 50gb of stuff. i haven't set up a cloud system yet, it's just a smb: share but i would be interested in success stories with home file/media servers · 3 years ago
