Anyone still use Google Voice? I have, for the past 14 years. It was super useful with a Nokia brick phone and a landline (and poor cell service at my house). But these days, what with iOS 17 having both live and static voicemail transcription, and me no longer having a voicemail... it just hit me all of a sudden... it's a relic from the past that is no longer necessary.

I'll keep my number, and will probably use it the next time I go job hunting out of state. It's useful to get a number with the same area code as where you're applying. I think it makes you look more serious about moving. I'm probably headed to Vermont eventually. We shall see!

I have two Google Voice numbers, one to use as an on-call number for work and one to use when signing up with services that require a phone number to keep my real number safe. · 1 year ago

Just so everyone is aware, there is a similar thing powered by XMPP protocol called JMP its not free but a few bucks a month is certainly not bad, plus its not spooked by the king of spook google themselves. find more at jmp.chat · 1 year ago

@sugar Oh wow! I was already texting, but on an old Nokia whose model I can no longer remember haha. Oh yeah, and actually... dating apps WOULD be a good use for my existing GV number. Good idea! · 1 year ago

I got in early as a student, and it was my first actual phone number that had texting service! I converted that number to my google fi account since i used it far more than my at&t number. I did recently spin up a new gvoice number for, uh, dating apps · 1 year ago

@ruby_witch Yes, honestly, I'm shocked it's survived so long, considering the sheer amount of (actually useful) things Google has axed over the years. I'm currently salty over Google Domains - and don't get me started on Notebook, Music, Trips, Google+, or News. ಠ_ಠ

Yes, I used to use it to talk to my overseas friends, before Telegram, WhatsApp, and FaceTime were a thing. I'd still use it for that, if I had elderly friends or family abroad - but I don't. Other than a place to secure a "custom" phone number in advance before moving somewhere, I just don't have a use case anymore. But it served me well these past 14 years! · 1 year ago

I have Google Voice and I use it weekly to call family in the US. It's pretty useful for family members who may be too old to really want to deal with setting up a video call. Also, having a "local" number that they can call is handy too, in case of emergencies.

I really hope that Google doesn't drop support for Voice like they have so many other services. I don't think there are many alternatives out there, especially not for free. · 1 year ago
