I don't know how to interpret the fact that HaikuOS' official repositories have two different Gemini browser (Lagrange and Kristall).

I have some fun with this OS on a VM, it's at the same time familiar (I don't feel the same estrangement as when I first tried Linux) and unfamiliar.

@johano, I tried to install TeXLive on my Haiku machine, but I wasn’t successful because I was using the 32-bit ancient gcc weirdness instead of the more common and better supported 64-bit installation. · 2 years ago

@adou2 I saw texlive and texstudio and texmaker in the repos but I didn't try them out... and I agree with you in re Firefox · 2 years ago

@johano and by “real web browser” I mean Firefox. · 2 years ago

@johano I could almost use it as a main OS too; the last thing I didn't try is LaTeX, but I don't have a lot of needs (I'd need a real web browser if I intended to use it daily, though). · 2 years ago

@adou2 you inspired me to fire up Haiku in VirtualBox and install Lagrange thru HaikuDepot... it's fun and I didn't realize how much software had been ported over... almost to the point where I could do 99% percent of what I use computers for in Haiku · 2 years ago

@adou2 I'd bet that Amfora could be ported easily... · 2 years ago

The HTML5 spec is massive as can be seen here: https://html.spec.whatwg.org/ It's mostly become an unknowable tangle to a single person and requires a team of engineers to decode the standard and implement it.

Gemini and the associated Gemtext format is something one could read in a single sitting. It's the paragon of a day of computing seemingly lost. "Keep things simple" · 2 years ago

2 Gemini browsers vs an old version of Dillo, Otter Browser, and NetPositive, all of which are ok but not great

Gosh the web is such a mess 😆 · 2 years ago

And both Lagrange and Kristall work better than Haiku's web browser. Firefox is not in the repositories.

There's no CLI Gemini-browser. It's quite strange. · 2 years ago
