Simple explanation + visualization of how the depth of field is affected by certain camera "parameters". Good complement to Chris Bray's aperture video.

§ 5. Aperture + Depth of Field

Parameters that affect the DoF:

Distance to subject :: distance from the sensor to the focal plane
Focal length :: distance from the sensor to the (main) lens
Aperture :: size of the iris' hole

How they affect the DoF:

Longer distance to subject => wider DoF; shorter distance to subject => shallower DoF
Longer focal length => shallower DoF; shorter focal length => wider DoF
Larger aperture => shallower DoF; Smaller aperture => wider DoF
