When we get hurt, the most natural response of our bodies or minds tends to be to scar or harden. As a result of this, we tend to assume that we get hurt so easily because we can't harden ourselves enough.
The reality is the opposite, the reason we get hurt so easily is actually because we can't soften ourselves enough. After all, in a lot of stories, the most difficult fictional creatures to hurt are not the rock golems. the most difficult creatures to hurt are the goo monsters*
* (goo monsters are those creatures that are so soft they don't even have a defined form. Instead, their bodies consist of an amorphous pile of sludge. They tend to be difficult to hurt because they tend to respond to attacks by just, kind of, melting around them)
