Windows Life

Doing sound and music design work, for me, is tied to using Windows. It's the only thing that attaches me to the platform, because I absolutely refuse to get into the Apple ecosystem. Windows has a lot of infamous things, but I feel it gives a lot more freedom than Macs. There are quite a few things I don't like at all about working with this OS: the ASIO drivers, the need for an external app for rtpMIDI, the inability to use more than one audio interface simultaneously, the widespread practice of having “install centers” for everything, etc.

I use Reaper, which has official binaries for Linux and should work fine, but.... What about all the software that has to be emulated? What about the plug-ins that work inside the emulated software? This software that has to be emulated for me is: Cubase, RX, SpectraLayers, Wavelab, Wwise, etc. It's a very long list of small and big programs.

Then there is the Unity part... A lot of times, for development, we use very very specific versions, and I don't know if all of them are available on Linux. For the rest of the team, who use other operating systems, it can be unproductive if there are small features that stop working because of using a different version.

Now of course, in the middle of the project, I can't start experimenting on my main computer, nor look for alternative software (especially after the economic investment I have already made in licenses), but it is something I would like to investigate a little in the near future... I think it's something I'll try on my mini-pc!
