I resolved to end 2024 the same way I started 2004: with no Facebook profile. I wanted to do this long ago, but it's only in recent times that the platform has crumbled to the point where I no longer feel like the people who've yet to escape Zuckerberg's grasp can meaningfully "hold me hostage", to borrow a phrasing from Cory Doctorow.
When the year started, I made a list of everything that I'll have to give up by deleting my profile -- every person in my feed who regularly posts things I genuinely enjoy reading, on FB and nowhere else. There were three such people, and as the year went own, every one of them started cross-posting their "content" elsewhere. One has opened a Discord server, another posts updates to a Telegram channel, and a third uploads a monthly linkpost to Substack. I won't have to give up anything of value after all.
