A Book of Condolence in memory of the veteran journalist and campaigner
Nell McCafferty has been opened in the Guildhall by the Mayor of Derry
and Strabane, Cllr Lilian Seenoi-Barr.
The passionate and courageous Derry writer was laid to rest yesterday
following a funeral service at the Long Tower Church, where friends,
families and dignitaries gathered to remember Nell and all she achieved
throughout her life through ardent campaigning and insightful
commentary.
Opening the book, Mayor Barr said Nell would forever be loved and
remembered by the people of Derry.
“It’s a privilege to be able to facilitate this tribute to Nell
McCafferty, as a way for the people of Derry and beyond to remember her
and share their sympathies with her family.
“Nell was fearless and uncompromising in her campaign to bring about
social change, and she used her talent as a writer as a tool to chip
away at the inequalities she fought against all her life. She was never
afraid to challenge the establishment and gave a voice to the
vulnerable through her work.
"She will be missed by so many, particularly in her home town of Derry.
But we will remember her with pride, and her legacy of truth will live
on in her writing and the many people she inspired for many years to
come.
"I would invite people to sign the Book of Condolence, either online or
at the Guildhall from today.”
