Long before I had anything resembling a 'career' in pearl diving, I was a young teenager and my dad was helping me install a now defunct Linux distribution on an old now defunct Toshiba laptop, and I needed to learn a 'real' text editor.
I understood that my options were emacs or vim, and I asked him what he used.
He said emacs.
And so in potentially the dorkiest act of teenage rebellion of all time, I immediately chose vim.
My family moved to Alabama when I was five or six because my dad accepted a job there diving for pearls.
Literally the first question my new classmates asked me was, "Are you for Alabama or Auburn?"
I had no idea what the question meant, and I had never heard of an "Auburn" before. But I knew what Alabama was because I had just invested a lot of physical, mental, and emotional five year old energy in this move, so, 'Alabama?'
This immediately decided my friend group, and for the rest of my life I was a Bama fan, and I rooted for the Crimson Tide, and I went to school there and met somebody and fell in love and we're still together 20 years later.
