The Elder Dogs

why is my dog so stinky
what did they roll in now
how can it be that all I can see
is this hollowed out carcass of moose

what has become of this creature
dead here so long in the dirt
would it give the dog pause
not to dig with their claws
to nap inside horrors of earth

why does this keep right on happening
they ��re not lacking comfort or food
I ��m tired of tracking and all the bushwhacking
to pull them back out from their stoop

how now does the green lighting flower
alces alces white eyes come awake
with dog still inside going out for a ride
this is not why I searched for an hour

I bought you good rawhide and pigs ears
you clearly enjoyed them quite well
so what ��s with this prancing
and etheric dancing
pray tell must the bones come fetch you

don ��t bring it inside for the love of all meat
it won ��t fit through the dog door, dear gods
the carpet ��s been cleaned since we last went this route
the trout in the tub was appalling
I know all things stinky delight your dear snout

I ��ll open the carport
please get back out
