Lacking Corpses

so perhaps you understand now
how it is not the dead that hurt most
but those passed on, into other lives
for one can grieve the dead
measure out components of their lives
believe in what they have been
move on

it is the living, made dead to you
survivor within the skin
who draw the deepest wound
knowing neither justice nor reason
no grief for them, and vengeance stayed
no moving on
