Long Wait
September 12, 1996

there's an assured kill up above five feet eight inches
six feet tall standing is four inches dead -- I stoop
all the time bent towards the enemy
humping shells into the machine on the hill
it's gray sides shaking out a warning rumble
humping food down to my boys, saying
"eat well," and "seven days are gone," and "never let up"
but I can't take time to think about more than the next trench
out across no man's land, where maybe their feet fall apart like mine
where maybe they're likewise less concerned with killing mine
than I am thinking what gets humped next and couldn't I stand just once
this hurts -- can't stop the sweat or puking, or the ringing
loud whine inside where the sound of machine guns used to live
trying to read the lips of my staff Sargent, waiting for him
maybe telling us to go the next push... waiting... dissolving...
no wonder those few who came back looked like demons
and I too a demon soon -- or four inches dead
