OSLO, Norway A woman and a man were killed in a shooting Friday outside a kindergarten in northern Norway, police said. No children were injured.

The shooting happened outside a kindergarten near the Slettaelva school in Tromsoe, the main city in the Norwegian Arctic, police said.

Police said one the two dead was the shooter, but it was not immediately clear which one. Police spokesman Tor Einar Eilertsen said "there is no third person involved."

The state radio network NRK said the woman was a student teacher at the school. Police could not confirm the report.

"We don't know the background or whether there was any link to the school," police attorney Torstein Lindquister told The Associated Press by telephone.

He said it was not clear how many children were nearby when the shooting occurred but that it was likely that at least some were in the vicinity. The shooting was reported to police at about 8:30 am (0730 GMT).
