Does anyone here have experience with gaming on Linux? I hear that steam games tend to be more reliable thanks to Proton, but GOG is my preferred retailer, and I've been told that games from GOG can be finicky unless they run in DOSBox. I have to decide whether or not I want to dual boot with windows or go pure Linux.

I love GoG, but sometimes games bought on Gog lack major features, like multiplayer or mod support. I tend to stick to Gog for "old" games or check support forum first to check there is no missing feature first 路 7 months ago

I play VRChat on Linux sometimes (usually when I happen to write code on Linux and don't want to boot into Windows).

Desktop mode the performance is actually compariable. Through proton 路 7 months ago

I use Linux for gaming, primarily with Steam. Works well. You can use Proton for games not bought via Steam, although I don't know how well that works in general. 路 7 months ago

Adding another voice in favor of gaming on Linux here. My primary hobby is gaming, and I've been Linux-only for over 3 years now. You can run any game that you like through Proton, and the easiest way to utilize Proton is just adding the game to your Steam library.

Pretty much the only games that you can't run are online competitive games that have some ridiculous anti-cheat solution built in, and even those can work if you're persistent enough...

For older games that you would consider using DosBox to run, they should all work perfectly. You can try checking the compatibility of a lot of titles on https://protondb.com 路 7 months ago

you can install proton on its own and boot the gog game with Lutris or add the gog game to your steam library and use proton that way. I have been gaming on Linux for years now and proton has truly made leaps and bounds thanks to the deck. 95% of your library will be playable and decently stable. 路 7 months ago

You should be able to play games from other sources through Proton by adding them as a non-Steam game within Steam. Personally all the games I've tried have just worked, but I don't play anything very demanding or recent. 路 7 months ago

Linux gamer here, I play Steam games through Proton, and GOG games through Heroic. They honestly do the job, though they do run slower than on Windows, but I use Ubuntu all the time, so the convenience of playing on Ubuntu beats the slightly better performance of Windows. 路 7 months ago
