As an interim step while I work on an AWK-only front-end, I've gone
through my ngabbr gab(1) front-end (a shell script) and replaced all the
'gab -X' instances with their gawkr_X counterparts which are stand-alone
AWK scripts. The modified ngabbr should be runnable by any RTC member
via ~zilog/public_bin/ngabbr.  Hopefully I can entice a few more RTC
members to help de-bug it.
