Tomo Nakayama - Melonday (2020)

I know the music of Tomo Nakayama primarily through the band Grand Hallway, for which he was the vocalist/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist. Grand Hallway makes beautiful chamber-pop/rock stuff with strings and woodwinds and pianos and guitars and other wonderful stuff. This album is not like that so much. On display here is Mr. Nakayama's knack for melody and a catchy pop tune. The songs are largely drum machine and synthesizer, with occasional guitar or bass. His voice is as enjoyable as always and the songs all float around the 4 minute mark and keep things pretty peppy.

I'll be honest, when I first heard this album I thought it was a great musician trying something different and not really succeeding. However, now that I have had some time with it I believe I misjudged it. I should never have been comparing it to Grand Hallway in the first place. It is its own thing and does what it does really well. I love turning this album on and dancing with my toddler (who recognizes the album any time I put it on and wants me to dance with her). I also like having it on while I'm working on something (doing the dishes, cleaning the house, shoveling snow, etc); it is upbeat and fun music. It is fun to sing along with and bounce about the house. It is seriously good music that isn't all too serious. If you are looking for something fun and upbeat you may just like it. As an aside, I also recommend checking out Grand Hallway.
