So we'd probably need to come up with a different format for compression of just single files.gzip by itself only ever compresses single files, leading to the common .tar.gz combination, where the tape archive (tar) contains any directory structure.
The MIME type text/gemini+gzip has been suggested for this earlier. [1] I think that would be a good solution although it is questionable how well browsers check the MIME type and if they would mistake "text/gemini+gzip" for plain "text/gemini", leading to some confusion. The +gzip suffix is registered by IANA [2].
