Back at It

The weather's been pretty dreary and grey for a while, but at least it hasn't been seasonally cold. -10 to -15, overcast, low wind. Not great, could be worse. The weekend was a nice break. Blazing sun on Saturday, so we went skating at an outdoor rink down by the river. Nobody there, so just us skating around, and occasionally falling. Of course we didn't sharpen our skates. It had been years since either of us used them.

We had supper with friends and while we waited to get in I had drinks at the bar with one of them. Drinking physically at the bar has always struck me as a particularly Manly thing. I've never really done it before. I had a pint of pale ale, a whisky after. We chatted, watched a bit of the NFL playoffs. I don't really care about football, but it was nice. The last few years defined so much by what we didn't do. It was nice to get out.

Today there was fresh snow. Shovelled it after we got up, had my morning coffee, and watched it continue to fall lazily all morning. Took the dogs for a walk just now, and they were delighted at the fresh snow. I think I jogged or ran half the walk. One of my dogs will be twelve soon. I'm writing this entry partly to come across it later, to remember that even as he spends most of his day sleeping in his favourite corner of the couch, he's still pretty trim and loves to run around outside. A reminder to myself to take them for longer walks when there's new snow. While his enthusiasm is still there.

Three quarters of the way through January. The month has gone by so fast.
