Surf music is my new obsession. I have always vaguely enjoyed surf music but somehow never took the time to explore it throughly enough to really get into it. When we got a turntable and started collecting records it was kind of a coincidental spark. I'm discovering and really enjoying a lot of old original surf rock bands from the 60s like Dick Dale and His Del-Tones and The Tornadoes (The one from the US, not the one from the UK) which are two of my favorites. There are a quite a lot of surf rock bands that have put out a lot of good music between the 60s and now too with different variations on the musical style. Some stick to pretty traditional surf rock style and some get more experimental.
Now when we visit a record store surf music is one of the first I look for. I have picked up a few good albums so far but I now have a growing list of albums to look for. If you like surf rock or are curious here are some good examples that you can listen to for free on the internet archive.

After I posted this gemlog entry this afternoon what showed up at the door? Three surf rock LPs and great ones at that! A couple Dick Dale albums and a best of the Tornadoes album. What a nice surprise.
