I don't remember the whole sequence that got me to visit my first Gopherhole. I think I saw something on Mastodon. I visited and was instantly enthralled by the simple structure and glimpses into people's lives. Soon after I found my first Gemini Capsules. Each one was unique but approachable. I wanted a similar place to post writing that wouldn't be appropriate for my professional website. Things like politics (left and trending left-er), disaster preparedness, and my dalliances with paganism, witchcraft, and tarot.
I still haven't quite wrapped my head around/found a good explanation of Gopher markup and structure, but after a quick review of the half-dozen or so thpes of markup in Gemini, I'm already writing and posting. It's pretty liberating to just edit the post directly and have it show up. No worries about running a static site generator or uploading the files to a remote server (though I should probably figure out a way to back the site up soon). Just write.
