Hugh Hefner is a genius.
Let s just make that clear right from the start. The founder and editor in
chief of Playboy magazine proved that once again this week when he chose Oregon
bred Sara Jean Underwood as the 2007 Playmate of the Year.
The spectacular 23-year-old blonde, a senior in business at Oregon State
University, beat out 11 other candidates to become the magazine s 48th Playmate
of the Year.
I thought I was going to puke, Underwood told The Associated Press. I
thought I was going to faint. I thought I was going to cry. It was every
emotion you can imagine one would feel when given such an honor.
Well, we know most of Oregon experienced just one emotion when the news broke:
sheer joy.
Playboy photographers first met Underwood as a college student when they
visited Oregon State University looking for candidates for the Girls of the
Pac 10 pictorial, the AP reported. She ended up on the cover of the October
2005 issue. She went on to pose for the centerfold of the July 2006 issue.
Underwood will appear in an eight-page nude pictorial in the June 2007 issue.
On a surprising note, Underwood never modeled before appearing in Playboy.
I didn t think I was pretty enough, she said. I m 5 3 , short,
freckle-faced. I m from Oregon. It wasn t a thought in my mind that I could do
something like that.
Underwood heads to Louisville this weekend, where she will host Playboy s
Kentucky Derby party.
She ll be in Portland to sign copies of the June Playboy on Friday, May 11,
from noon to 2 p.m. at Rich s Cigar Store, 820 S.W. Adler St.
She received $100,000 in prize money and a 2007 Mini Cooper S convertible along
with her title as Playmate of the Year.

Thursday night, I attended the Playboy June Issue Party hosted by the 2007
Playmate of the Year, Sara Jean Underwood at The Garden of Eden in Hollywood. I
used to go to the Garden of Eden years ago, so I was surprised when I got there
that the place hasn't changed at all. I mean, it wouldn't hurt them to throw
some new paint on the walls, or buy some new furniture. Ikea's not expensive,
y'all. Yeah, that's how exciting this event was. I was checking out the
furniture.
The party was OK, as you've probably guessed by now. Sara Jean Underwood showed
up fashionably late with a couple of body guards that followed her around while
she snapped pictures with fans. Since she was so late, I expected her to look A
LOT better than she did. She seemed like she had been at home watching TV and
suddenly remembered she had this engagement, rolled off the couch, brushed the
crumbs off her lap from the TV dinner she'd been picking at and showed up. I
know she's a Playmate and it doesn't matter what she is wearing, but still. If
you're day job is to be beautiful, by God, run a comb through ya weave before
you step out!
