Just Deserts

• Frank Herbert's "Dune" is in part inspired by the Oregon dunes eating Florence, similar to how a cockroach ate Cincinnati.
• Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Tombs of Atuan" was likewise inspired:

Now came the great, improbably impetus to the book: a road trip to south-eastern Oregon...I knew my novel would be set in that desert.

• Sand Pudding is apparently a real dessert.
