Purchasing Land
I'm considering moving from my city (Portland, OR) to the countryside. I need to remain within ~30-60 minutes of the city. Here are a few things I'm interested in for the new property:
- I'd like it to have running water (i.e a stream with associated water rights), as I think that it would be nice to find wildlife in it, play with small-scale hydropower and for the general beauty.
- I'd like for it to have a variety of terrain. Flats and inclines.
- I'd prefer a variety of biomes (woods, fields, mountains).
- I don't want to carry a mortgage on the new place.
- The land needs to be adequately sized for a moderate garden.
- There needs to be space for additional structures (definitely a workshop, but also perhaps a small, standalone home office deeper in the woods?)
- It should get good sun in order to use solar power.
- It needs to rain there for passive water sequestration purposes (i.e. not in the rain shadow).
- It needs to be grid connected, including high speed internet. While I endeavor to reduce our grid reliance, I work from home, so this is a must.
I'm flexible on some of these, especially the mortgage one, but this is the general thrust of my interest.
