If you don't know, you can prevent your debian-based system downloading something by adding a plain file into /etc/apt/preferences.d/ with the content of (as an example):

Package: *elogind*:any

Pin: origin *

Pin-Priority: -1

(Change the "elogind" to whatever it is you want to boycott!)

What that does is, the package specified, any part of it like subpackages be caught by the :any line, and "origin *" means it includes all origins, while "Pin-Priority: -1" is what tells apt to exclude it from any downloading!

I like to use Lynx for gopher & some web, sometimes Dillo, Links2 for some web, Palemoon for rest except for spattering of Librewolf and Ungoogled Chromium, and either Lagrange or Amfora for gemini!

E3 text editor (using Vi mode) for terminal text, Leafpad for GUI, Libreoffice for rich text, MPV for videos & .gif as well as audio sometimes, XMMS for having GUI for most audio, Mirage for most image viewing, GIMP for art, IceWM window manager, and a mix of Rox & zzzfm file managers!

pdftotext (from poppler-utils in debian-based OS, other poppler elsewhere?) to convert .pdf to .txt, which hopefully sanitize them a lot. Libreoffice can handle the rest of text file conversions pretty well imo!
