‘He needs help’: Drunk man could barely stand in Kildare courtroom

Ciaran Mather, 24 May

A defendant who appeared before Naas District Court on Thursday, May

18, was so drunk that he could barely stand.

The man, who is understood to be homeless, was seen staggering while

making his way to the stand in Naas District Court, and was slurring

his speech.

Judge Desmond Zaidan remarked that he was familiar with the man, and

admitted that 'he had never seen him this bad.'

"You're in a bad way; you're beginning to sound like a sketch from

Brendan Grace," he told the man.

The man went on a rant about not receiving his phone from a garda

station, and became emotional, adding: "Everything has been taken from

me."

Judge Zaidan told gardaí that he was concerned for the man's wellbeing,

adding: "I don't want to release him in this state, I'm worried about

him; what if he goes outside and gets knocked down, or even killed?

"It's sad seeing a human being like this. He needs help, God love him."

Speaking directly to the man, he said: "You are throwing your life away

to alcohol," to which the man replied: "I know."

However, when defending solicitor Brian Larkin said that he would look

after the man on the date in question, the judge released him on bail

and adjourned the case to October 26.
