trying new things

i'm bad at learning new things, but i enjoy it sometimes.

here's what i've been up to on my computer recently:

void linux

void is a linux distribution that doesn't include systemd or glibc, and since i already tried alpine linux, i wanted to give it a try. so far it works. it's linux. it's not *too* different. i was thinking about using a bsd or even plan9 on my desktop, but i ended up here again. i might try a funnier OS in a virtual machine or on another computer, but i want the usability of linux for now.

helix

helix is a vim-like text editor made in rust. it's very fast and looks cute out of the box. unfortunately, there's no current auto-indentation for scheme or common lisp, and i'm not sure how well i'd be able to implement that kind of functionality. i'd like to try setting up a scheme language server, but i'm always scared of lsp's; i can never get them working well...

matrix, xmpp, fedi, gemini

matrix so far is really cute. i don't self-host it though, so i don't know how big of a hassle it is. i do like it a lot so far :3

i've used xmpp for a while, and it's nice, but i could never really understand how to use it well. a lot of work still needs to be put into clients, i think. i use cheogram on android. on desktop i'm torn between gajim and profanity (aparte looks promising but no omemo yet).

conclusion

i just wanted to write something and put it on my gemlog for once. it's been a while...
