University of Limerick seeks planning to add student accommodation at landmark site

PLASSEY Campus Centre (PCC), a subsidiary of the University of

Limerick, is seeking planning permission to transform a well-known

space in Castletroy into student accommodation.

The Park Point complex on the Dublin Road which currently is home to a

Travelodge hotel will potentially undergo a major transformation

subject to the planning process.

The proposed redevelopment would see floors six to nine above the

Travelodge turned into student accommodation.

The proposed development will also see an ancillary foyer developed at

ground level within the Park Point building. The space is currently

designated as office space.

Limerick campus

It is understood that the re-development is a procedural change to

allow for more activity in the building.

UL purchased Park Point in 2016 for €4.1 million.

“UL has been and continues to be very active in seeking solutions to

the current shortage of student accommodation in Limerick,” a

spokesperson for the university said.

“UL continues to fully investigate all viable, cost-effective

opportunities to increase our student accommodation stock," they added.

UL is also currently running a media campaign to encourage landlords to

come forward with off-campus accommodation options.
