Sound Associations

~overproof

Observing the random passersby, past this terrace they weave and wander, then disperse along the arterial sidewalks. Nearly each pedestrian is wearing headphones of some style and orientation. Squinting through my glasses, I become more acutely aware of the body language of those as they pass, and I attempt (feebly) for fun to speculate which artists and songs each might be listening to.

If I could ever assess with any degree of certainty, I would be more interested to know the emotional contexts and attachments, if any, might be driving their decisions to listen to what they are. This Taylor Swift song might make someone’s ears bleed, but carries associations with their new crush. That used to be your favorite song, played by your favorite artist, but ever since the break-up, you haven’t touched it.

What songs have y’all had on heavy rotation lately? Are there any that carry a specific or special relevance? What do you listen to in times of happiness? Devastation? For catharsis? I’ve gotta think for a minute on mine, but I’ll be back with a list of mine. I’d be interested to know anyone else’s go-to’s.

I keep finding new albums. The music choices are endless...

My last month finds:

Rising - Rainbow (hard rock, all tracks are awesome)

Liquid Swords - GZA (hip hop)

Revolution Era - Derdian (power metal, some tracks are 10/10 others are tiring.)

Really like what you said about songs that you have bad associations with. For me, I associate the song Shut Up and Dance by Walk The Moon with my ex and now I almost can't listen to it.

On a more happy and strange note, I associate the smartphone game Flappy Golf with the show Brooklyn Nine Nine because of the amount of time that I spent both watching the show and playing the game. Does anyone else have associations like that?

Here are the standout tracks from over this past week:

Hannah Sun by Lomelda

Don’t Understand by The Weather Station

The River by Big Bite

I’m Not Falling Asleep by Andy Shauf

Garden Song by Phoebe Bridgers

1999 by Hovvdy

Instead of launching into some big psychoanalysis, I feel like referring to my post prior to this (also my first post on MP 2.0) might explain my recent mood in relation to the songs I’ve been stuck on lately.

Seems obvious to me, but then it seems obvious that it would. While membership here is still small, I’m hoping and looking forward to hearing what everyone else has been into lately. There’s never a bad time for discovering new music.
