Etymology

Hubbub (n.)

1550s, whobub "confused noise," of uncertain origin; according to OED generally

believed to be of Irish origin, perhaps from Gaelic ub!, expression of aversion

or contempt, or Old Irish battle cry abu, from buide "victory."

"Never believe a word you read in an etymological dictionary. To me the word

hubbub is associated with a low frequency vibration of a collection of voices

all talking at once and whereby no specific words are distinguishable and the

atmosphere is one of conviviality, not confusion. Confusion is a psychotic

condition. Can occur just as much outdoors in the street as in the smoke filled

atmosphere of an "underground" cafe. The origin is a direct experience from my

own childhood" - oak3
