Immaterial stories

What would happen if you were to divorce a story from words on a page?

It becomes a legend, something passed down and archetypal. It no longer becomes tied to a book[1], or an author. The story becomes immaterial.

How might we make stories as consumable as a movie but as open-ended as a book? What other ways of experiencing a story are there?
